Experience Vinschgau
Exciting destinations for young and old
A vacation in Vinschgau also becomes a journey into the history and culture of South Tyrol. Countless castles, churches, ruins, and museums in the vicinity bear witness to our long and eventful history and tell of a deep connection between man and nature. We have put together the most beautiful cultural treasures that you absolutely must visit.
At the end of the valley in Trafoi, beneath the waterfalls of Madatschspitze, lies a historic Marian pilgrimage site. The easy path, which is even suitable for strollers, leads from the nature park visitor center naturatrafoi, passing the church of Trafoi and the campsite, all the way to the Holy Three Fountains, a recreational area with public barbecue spots.
Tip: Stop by the Sogboden inn – perfect for a coffee break with homemade treats. Whether it's a fragrant cappuccino, fresh cake, or a light snack, you'll find something delightful.
Glurns is not only the smallest town south of the Alps, but also the only one in South Tyrol whose city walls and gates are still completely intact. Between the picturesque arcades, the town mill, stately noble and bourgeois buildings, and the permanent exhibition of artist Paul Flora in the Tauferer Gate Tower, you will immerse yourself deeply in history.
Churburg in Schluderns was built in 1253 by the Bishops of Chur and has been owned by the Counts of Trapp since 1504. Visitors are greeted by an impressive Renaissance castle with an arcade made of Laas marble, a Romanesque castle chapel, and the largest private armory in the world, featuring over 50 knight’s armors, including weapons. The castle is open for guided tours.
The Messner Mountain Museum in Sulden is located underground. South Tyrolean extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner dedicated it to ice in all its forms. It tells the story of glaciers, polar expeditions, avalanches, skiing, and the myths and threats surrounding ice. Meanwhile, outside, the ice of Ortler is within arm's reach.
The exhibition at naturatrafoi provides fascinating insights into the geology of the Ortler range, as well as the wildlife and plant life in the high alpine region above the tree line. The extreme conditions found here have led to the development of remarkable survival strategies.
In the mountains above Laas, world-famous white marble is extracted, and it has even made its way to Ground Zero in New York. Experience the fascination of this stone on one of the various guided tours offered. Enjoy exciting film screenings, a tour of the mine and workshop, the Laas cable car, and much more.
